Summary
Kaskaskia Engineering Group, LLC (KEG) is a member of the program management team tasked with supporting the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) in the development, design, public involvement, and implementation of the new high-speed rail service from Chicago to St. Louis. For over a decade, IDOT has pursued improvements to passenger rail service between Chicago and St. Louis. With the addition of $1.2 billion in federal funding, improvements to the Chicago to St. Louis Corridor are becoming a reality.
Project
KEG was responsible for creating a planning document for potential stations in Alton and East St. Louis, Illinois. KEG personnel developed the evaluation criteria for sites, and after identifying potential terminal sites in Alton and East St. Louis, each site was evaluated based on these criteria. Evaluations were based on necessary infrastructure improvements, intermodal connection, access to the metro area, rail alignment, train speed (geometrics), utility availability, environmental issues, site purchase price, parking availability, safety, growth-inducing issues, and access to existing support services.
IDOT Safety Mart GIS data was utilized to assess intersections surrounding the potential sites for existing hazardous traffic patterns.
