Summary
Kaskaskia Engineering Group, LLC (KEG) prepared the Phase II engineering construction drawings, specifications, cost estimate, and estimate of time for the new interchange at Mile Maker 21 along Interstate 64 in St. Clair County, Illinois. This new interchange provides direct access to Scott Air Force Base (SAFB), MidAmerica St. Louis Airport, and planned developments north and south of the interstate. The project also included 3 miles of widening of Interstate 64 to a six-lane roadway, enclosing the median open-ditch drainage system with an enclosed storm sewer system, and the addition of a concrete median barrier wall. The new interchange included replacing the existing two-lane Rieder Road Bridge over Interstate 64 with an 80 feet wide bridge that is able to accommodate the projected traffic volumes at the interchange. The interchange also included lighting and signalized intersections.
Project
As part of the development of the construction drawings and details, KEG prepared horizontal realignments for local roadways including 1.5 miles of Rieder Road, Wherry Road, and Shiloh Valley Township Road. As part of the realignment of the local roadways, new vertical profiles, meeting current design standards were also developed. KEG also prepared the drainage design for the new open-ditch system along the local roadways. KEG prepared traffic signal plans for 4 new intersections along Rieder Road as well as the pavement marking and signing plans. KEG performed pavement design for the local roadways. KEG was also responsible for preparing the temporary and permanent erosion control design.
KEG oversaw a team of subconsultants who prepared the lighting plans, bridge plans, and overhead sign truss foundation plans.
KEG also provided Phase II engineering design services for the improvements along Interstate 64. Pavement marking and signing plans were developed for 3 miles of widening of Interstate 64 as well as for the new interchange. KEG delineated the existing drainage areas along the Interstate 64 corridor and, utilizing the existing roadway profile and typical sections, developed proposed drainage areas and determined inlet locations along Interstate 64 to meet current IDOT drainage design policies. KEG prepared special details to address connections of the proposed drainage system to existing culverts. KEG also prepared the MOT plan to accommodate the various construction phases.
Due to programmed project funding for the construction of the improvements, KEG completed the Phase II engineering drawings, specifications, cost estimate, and estimate of time in four months. The project construction began during the summer of 2014 and is estimated to be completed by the end of 2016.
