Summary

The Illinois Capitol Development Board (CDB) contracted with Quadrant Design Architects, Farmer Environmental Services, and Kaskaskia Engineering Group, LLC (KEG) to prepare construction design plans and project manuals for the demolition of the Administration Building and Cold Storage Facility at Menard’s Correctional Center.   The Administration Building is a 56,178 square foot, four-story building with addition constructed in 1878 and 1888 respectively. The Cold Storage Building is a 14,620 square foot, two-story building constructed in 1937.

Project

The project team provided demolition and removal of the Administrative Building and old Cold Storage Building, capping and removing utilities and surroundings pavements, providing new security fences and barrier walls to meet the institutional requirements, and infilling all doorways and passageways. The work included providing necessary structural analysis and end wall attachment and bracing necessary to the adjacent cell houses, and weatherproofing the exterior cell house end walls.

KEG provided a topographic survey of the existing buildings and utilities, building demolition plans and specifications, onsite measurements of existing utilities, reviewed existing Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) codes for compliance, and coordinated with utility providers to determine the removal and/or relocation of the center’s utility facilities, complied with Menard’s security guidelines and safety and life requirements, and verified existing building dimensions.

KEG will also provide inspection and construction supervision during the demolition phase construction, answer bidder questions during the bidding phase, direct the contractor through the completion of the project, and provide as-built drawings.
