Summary
Kaskaskia Engineering Group, LLC (KEG) provided transportation engineering design services for the reconstruction of Trunk Highway 1 and Trunk Highway 59 (US 59) in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. The project was primarily an urban reconstruction project, which included a 10-foot-wide multi-use trail to accommodate pedestrian and bicycle users. The construction of roundabouts at the CR16, Barzen Avenue, and Brooks Avenue intersections and frontage road improvements to allow for access closures and/or consolidation were also included in the project scope. The corridor included an existing at-grade Minnesota Northern Railroad crossing. The purpose of the project was to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion and crashes.
Project
This project was a part of the Thief River Falls multi-project plan for the 2020 construction season. It was the largest of the projects and was an important roadway project for the City, as MnDOT continues to improve its highway network.
KEG was responsible for developing and preparing the construction staging plans and traffic control plans for the detour routes, including detour signage design. KEG used a combination of full closure and a phased construction approach to maintaining local access and regional traffic movement during the construction of the roundabouts. Phase 1 included a detour onto First Street for the reconstruction of Trunk Highway 1, and Phase 2 utilized a detour onto 190th Street NE and 120th Ave NW for the construction of the roundabouts.
KEG also assisted Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. with creating the quantity tabulations and aided with Microstation drafting for the project. KEG staff from the Belleville, Illinois corporate office, Geneva, Illinois office, and Evansville, Indiana office worked seamlessly with partners in St. Paul, Minnesota to successfully deliver the project.
