Summary
Kaskaskia Engineering Group, LLC (KEG) served as a subconsultant to DLZ to perform traffic data collection services for the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) in Districts 2, 4, and 5. IDOT collects traffic data along its interstates, US routes, state routes, and unmarked highways under its jurisdiction on a regular schedule to have accurate traffic volume data along the roadways and at intersections. This traffic count data is then adjusted for various factors such as seasonal and day-of-week by IDOT and then published on the IDOT website. KEG’s field team was responsible for installing, recording, and removing traffic counter devices on various routes within the project’s scope.
Project
The overall project scope included the collection of approximately 10,011 24-hour and 340 48-hour field traffic counts in Districts 2, 4, and 5. Of these, the KEG team counted a total of 523 locations. The traffic collection entailed obtaining accurate machine traffic counts using magnetic lane counters, video devices, and road tube counters, and submitting the raw traffic data to the department’s district project manager for processing.
Throughout 2020 and 2021, KEG was responsible for the installation of both road tube counters and magnetic lane counters (Hi-Star traffic counters) and performing 24-hour, and 48-hour average daily traffic (ADT) volume counts along various IDOT roadways. KEG was tasked with completing traffic counts within an aggressive schedule. The traffic data collected was submitted to IDOT for review and acceptance on time and within budget.
