Summary
Kaskaskia Engineering Group, LLC (KEG) provided geotechnical services to the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority (ISTHA) as a sub-consultant to The Upchurch Group. As part of the project, the existing bridge carrying traffic over the Tollway ramps connecting I‐88 and I‐294 were removed and replaced with a new, wider bridge structure. The new bridge provides four lanes on Windsor Drive along with a 10‐foot‐wide landscaped median and sidewalks in both directions. Replacement of the existing two‐lane bridge also accommodates work by the Village of Oak Brook to widen Windsor Drive to four lanes between Swift Road and Cermak Road. In addition, the existing four-span bridge was replaced with a two‐span structure to improve Tollway maintenance and operations in the area and accommodate any ramp or roadway improvements needed in the future. Additional work on this project included the reconstruction of outside shoulders on the ramps connecting eastbound I‐88 to southbound I‐294 and northbound I‐294 to westbound I‐88, along with erosion control and landscaping.
Project
KEG provided geotechnical drilling services and structural geotechnical report preparation for the complete replacement of an existing four-span structure with a new two-span structure located at Windsor Drive over the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) East-West Connector in DuPage County, Illinois. The existing structure was originally constructed in 1958.
KEG’s geotechnical staff utilized a combination of existing boring data, supplemented by new boring data for the geotechnical analysis, which included global stability of slopes and walls, foundation recommendations for the bridge, and construction recommendations for general fill placement and pavement design.
Results of the exploration and analysis were summarized in a Structural Geotechnical Report (SGR) per ISTHA and Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) specifications. Six structure borings were completed.
