Summary
The Illinois Capital Development Board (CBD) contracted with BRiC Partnership, LLC and Kaskaskia Engineering Group, LLC (KEG) to evaluate the replacement of existing fire alarm systems at seven (7) buildings on Southern Illinois University-Carbondale’s campus. The buildings assessed included Faner Hall, Lesar Law Building, Davies Hall, Parkinson Laboratory, Lindgren Hall, Engineering Building, and the Forestry Building. These buildings include the following areas/spaces: Lecture Halls, Auditoriums, Study Rooms, Training Courtroom, Classrooms, Library Stacks, Labs (Wet and Dry), Computer Labs, Workshops, Exhibit spaces, Conference Rooms, Storage Areas, Machine Shops, Mechanical, and Research Areas, and Offices.
Project
The existing systems within the buildings currently have conventional fire alarms with horn/strobes and pull stations. Some systems are not fully operational and did not meet current codes. The new fire alarm systems will be fully network addressable and include voice evacuation. The fire alarm systems will also interface with other building systems as needed. All systems will communicate with and be monitored by the University’s Facilities Operation Center.
KEG provided verification of room designation; field investigations to determine floor, ceiling, and wall characteristics; verification of operational alarm system, compiled data for spreadsheet entries, reviewed project data, and systems, and surveyed existing facilities for compliance with building codes.
KEG also assisted BRiC Partnership with preparing design manuals for the proposed systems and value engineering of the systems suitable for the client’s budget.
