Summary
Kaskaskia Engineering Group, LLC (KEG) provided culvert inspection services to HNTB Corporation throughout Ortonville and Big Stone County, Minnesota. KEG’s services included GPS location, visual inspection, and condition assessment of over 70 centerline culverts and 130 entrance culverts along a 25-mile section of rural state highway in preparation for a mill and inlay project. The project also included detailed hydrologic and hydraulic analyses of each culvert and recommendations for replacement or repair.
Project
During the culvert inspection and inventory, KEG inspected culverts that consisted of corrugated metal pipe, concrete pipe, slip-lined culverts, and concrete box culverts. The conditions varied throughout the corridor, but deficiencies included rusting, deformation, joint separation, cracking, and efflorescence.
Throughout this process, KEG used ArcGIS Collector to create a custom form for inventory and assessment. ArcGIS Collector is an app-based software (available on Apple, Andriod, and Windows) that allows for real-time asset inventory and assessment. Each culvert location was GPS located, inventoried by length and type, and then assessed for condition, age, and operational acceptability. We were also able to document the condition of the culvert and surrounding areas with photographs. All of this information was immediately uploaded into a database via ArcGIS and used nearly real-time by office personnel to assess, report progress, and review of inconsistencies or gaps.
