Summary
Kaskaskia Engineering Group, LLC (KEG) provided geotechnical exploration and analysis services for the development of a Roadway Geotechnical Report (RGR) for the proposed realignment of Shattuc Road and a new intersection at US 50 in Carlyle, Illinois.
Project
Railroad tracks converge on Shattuc Road at its intersection with US 50, contributing to congestion at the existing intersection. Local commercial and commuter traffic, in conjunction with the railroad, created a dangerous intersection. The proposed realignment was to reduce the potential for accidents and relieve congestion.
KEG geotechnical personnel performed soil logging and field testing for nine borings along the proposed alignment to depths of 6.5 to 8 feet. The RGR report addressed subgrade and excavation on the proposed realignment of Shattuc Road. The geotechnical analysis recommended additional soil modifications and treatment of the subgrade due to high plasticity clays to depths of 12 to 20 inches below pavement subgrade elevations.
In addition, due to the presence of three parallel petroleum pipelines ranging from 30 to 36 -inches in diameter, at depths of 6 feet or more below the proposed subgrade, KEG recommended that the backfill of the pipelines be checked and monitored closely in conjunction with petroleum personnel during construction to reduce the potential for differential settlement, which could impact the integrity of the pipelines and the long-term subgrade support of the road.
